A marathon is a race of 26.2 miles, or about 40,000 steps. Obviously, most people do not take 40,000 steps a day – much less at a fast pace and often under less-than-ideal conditions.

While the marathon is a classic event that many people are drawn to run, sports physiology has just begun to fully understand the effects of the marathon on your body.
